I am Anna Palfrey, a detective in Thames Valley Police. In September 2018 my partner Tom Dorman was hit by a car whilst on duty and, as a result of his injury, lost his leg below the knee.
Since Tom’s discharge, Police Care UK have been a great help to Tom through funding a new wheelchair and a handbike, both of which are fit for his needs.
I wanted to do something myself to raise funds and make people aware how Police Care UK can help those in need. Many people simply do not know that they exist.
I decided to take on the almighty Wolf Runs. These are a series of runs interspersed with obstacles, rivers and differing terrain. Previously I’d completed 1 wolf run which was in the summer of 2018, a hard task but one I thoroughly enjoyed. There are four wolf runs across the year – each in a different season; spring, summer, autumn and winter. I plan to complete all 4 runs across the year.
Having previously struggled with knee pain when running, my training focused on cardio fitness and weight training to get my strength up.
Admittedly I was extremely apprehensive for the first run due to the very cold temperatures, and the thought of submerging myself in freezing water was not a good one.
The run started well, however after the first 3km I experienced severe pain in my knee which meant I had to walk the remainder. This made the cold temperatures even harder. But I soon realised that the brief pain I was experiencing was nothing in comparison to what some of the beneficiaries of this amazing charity have been and continue to go through.
I finished the run in 2hours 10minutes and was very happy to finally finish and get warm and dry!
I am looking forward to the next run where I hope my knee is better and the weather is warmer!
