Our History

Police Care UK was launched in May 2019 but has a much longer history. Our organisation grew out of the National Police Fund and The Police Dependant’s Trust, which merged and rebranded into the charity we are today.

1926

In December 1926, following the general strikes, the editor of the Times newspaper petitioned the Home Secretary to form a charity that would provide for improved conditions for the police. It was established by Royal Charter issued by HM King George V. This became known as the National Police Fund.

1966

In 1966, on the afternoon of Friday 12th August, three on duty police officers stopped a car for a routine inspection in London. There were three occupants in the vehicle which was parked close to Wormwood Scrubs prison on Braybrook Street, Hammersmith. All three officers were shot at the scene and as a result Detective Sergeant Christopher Head, Detective Constable David Wombwell and Police Constable Geoffrey Fox lost their lives that day in the line of duty.

The public were outraged and wanted to show support to the families of the deceased officers. As a result, donations started to pour in. Following this huge public support and generosity The Police Dependant’s Trust was established.

2019

In 2019 it was decided that these two funds would merge and rebrand and on 11th February 2019 Police Care UK was launched. This change was made in order to create a name and a brand that was better understood by the people we were trying to help and to amalgamate funds to allow a holistic service that could better support all of those with a policing connection practically. emotionally and financially.
