Fundraiser Elena Alekova takes on the Rome Marathon later this year for Police Care UK and for those putting themselves in harm’s way to keep others safe.
Elena, who hopes to pursue a career in policing in the future, aims to complete the 26 miles course through the picturesque Italian capital on March 22.
She is aiming to raise more than £650 for our vital work providing specialist clinical therapy and financial assistance to serving and former police officers, staff, and volunteers who have suffered physical or psychological harm in their policing role.
And while she admits training is tough, it pales in comparison to the challenges front line police face on a daily basis.
“I’ve always admired the incredible work that police officers and staff do every single day – putting themselves in difficult and sometimes dangerous situations to keep others safe,” she says
“I know how demanding and emotionally challenging it can be.
“Training for a marathon is tough, but it’s nothing compared to what many in the police service go through.
“Every mile I run is my way of showing appreciation and raising funds to make sure these everyday heroes get the care and support they deserve.”
Last year, 78% of those who came to us for help had a mental health concern. More than half of those individuals had PTSD, Complex PTSD, or undiagnosed trauma – stuck reliving some of the most distressing experiences from their careers in policing.
Police Care UK are here to help them, and their families, to recover and restore their lives.
